Yellow Fever Vaccination: What You Need to Know Before Travelling
If your next overseas trip includes parts of Africa, South America, or Central America, you may need to be vaccinated against Yellow Fever. This serious, mosquito-borne disease can cause severe illness, and in some countries, vaccination is not just recommended—it’s mandatory for entry.
As your trusted GP in Bentleigh, the team at Bentleigh Doctors can guide you through everything you need to know about Yellow Fever and help ensure your trip goes smoothly.
What is Yellow Fever?
Yellow Fever is a viral infection transmitted by infected mosquitoes. It can cause fever, liver damage, and in severe cases, bleeding and organ failure. There’s no cure for Yellow Fever, but the vaccine is highly effective and usually provides lifelong protection after just one dose.
Countries That Require the Yellow Fever Vaccine
Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South America require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination, especially if you’re arriving from a country where the disease is present.
Some popular destinations include:
-
Brazil
-
Peru
-
Kenya
-
Ghana
-
Nigeria
-
Colombia
-
Bolivia
-
Uganda
Even if vaccination isn’t mandatory for entry, it’s still strongly recommended to protect your health when visiting high-risk areas.
Where to Get the Yellow Fever Vaccine in Bentleigh
The Yellow Fever vaccine is only available at accredited vaccination centres. While Bentleigh Doctors is not an accredited Yellow Fever vaccination site, our GPs can:
-
Assess your travel risk and tell you whether the Yellow Fever vaccine is required or recommended.
-
Provide a referral to the nearest accredited centre.
-
Administer all other essential travel vaccines, such as Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and Tetanus.
-
Offer personalised travel health advice, including mosquito bite prevention, antimalarial medications, and safe food and water tips.
When Should You Get the Vaccine?
You must receive the Yellow Fever vaccine at least 10 days before entering an at-risk country, or your vaccination certificate may not be considered valid.
That’s why we recommend booking a travel consultation with a GP in Bentleigh at least 6–8 weeks before departure. This gives you enough time to complete all necessary vaccinations and preparations.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
Once vaccinated, you’ll receive an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP)—commonly known as the Yellow Card. Keep this with your passport when travelling, as border control may request to see it.
